100 Days of Gratitude - Day 39 - Austin Magic Clubs

Today I'm thankful for the Austin Magic Community. Ring 60 of the IBM and Assembly 206 of the SAM.

Over the years I've met some of my closest friends at club meetings, worked out new material in a supportive atmosphere, and even bought much of the early (and some current) parts of my magic shows at their annual Auction.

My early mentors, both in business and in performing were from the clubs. The connection to the promoter I've worked with for the past 17 years and 1100+ shows came from a friend from the club.

If you're around long enough you'll be president. I was in the late 80's or early 90's.

I don't make it out to the meetings very often any more - and I'm not even officially a member of either club (you have to join the National IBM and/or SAM to be a member) - but I'm always here to help the up and comers, just like the older pros were there for me when I started out.

Some key people in the magic clubs over the years who deserve a special shout out: Fred and Judy Donaldson, Dan Murphy, Bobby Cordell, Kent Cummins, Ray Anderson, Mary Cay Gold, Brad Henderson, Brian Brushwood - those are the folks who were around and active (most still are) when I joined the club and was an active member.

Now the clubs are getting new energy and life from Hull Youngblood, Doc Seaton, Chris Walden, John Maverick, Will and Heather Mannis, Diane Klinetrob, Cy Albertson, Richard Garriott and a handful of others who all put in a lot of work to make sure that people have a place to go and share their passion and enthusiasm about the art of magic.

I know I've left out a LOT of names - none were intentional - I truly appreciate the clubs and I wish I could be around more often, but know that I'm always around to help - even if it's just by phone or e-mail. The community was there for me as I grew - I'm here for those in the same position I was in years ago. Hell... I still grow from being a part of this group.
