100 Days of Gratitude - Day 41 - Great Audiences

Today I was reminded what a truly great audience feels like. Thanks New Braunfels.

It's my job to always do my best as a performer. It's not really the audiences job to enjoy the show, but it is my job to get them to enjoy the show.

I don't know what it is, but there are a handful of theaters and schools that I go to where the audiences are just awesome and I feed off of their energy. It's not surprising that these also tend to be some of the best shows.

I don't know what it is about towns or schools that make this difference - but there are a few that I just love and look forward to going back to.

For magic shows it's always New Braunfels, Kerrville, Fredricksburg and Boerne - all bedroom communities of San Antonio, upper middle class, and artsy towns. I'm not sure why these are consistantly excellent audiences, but I love these towns and they tend to love me too. It's a win-win.

For Hypnosis shows it's USF-Tampa, Northern Arizona University and though I haven't been back in 3-4 years Tarleton State University was also in that group for years. I'll be back at USF and NAU this fall. Embry Riddle University is a new addition to this list. We've played there several times with our Game Shows To Go and I was there for the first time doing hypnosis last August, and I'm booked back again this year. For hypnosis I like these schools because they have HUGE turnouts to the shows - 1500-3000 people and I get treated like a rock star. Plus, we get rock star shows at these events.

Sometimes, as a performer, you just don't want a show to end. For those audiences, for those shows, I'm truly thankful. If I ever had to retire from performing - it's those shows that I'd remember the best.

I try hard to love every audience - I want to make that clear - just sometimes it just feels MAGIC.

Here's a video of one of those magical, high energy groups at NAU last year. The auditorium seats 2000, and we had two capacity crowds.
